New studio starting, Sept 4/05

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Thanks for the info Kris. It was very helpful. I read the label on the Sealant when I was in the store and noticed that the guy who was having trouble with it wasn't following the insructions as far as how big a gap you could fill. However I'm going to start putting Gyproc on the ceiling between the joists almost right away so I'm going to return the Lepage and see if I can find something else before I start.

Thanks on the Roxul info. The place I saw the Safe'n'Sound at is one of the main dealers locally for Roxul so I'm thinking they will probably have the AFB. If not, it's good to know there's no big difference between them.

So much to learn here. I just found out pcf means pounds per cubic foot. I've been staring blankly at the insulation specs wondering what to buy. I feel better now. The help here is invaluable.

Thanks again,
Frank

Well I found a Butyl-based acoustic caulking at a paint store. The only other kinds available anywhere else were Mono and Lepage's and they are both on the no-no list. The kind I found was Mulco Acoustik I ordered some and should have it on Tuesday which is fine cuz I have a gig in Whitehorse this weekend.

They also are able to get the backer rod. I'm assuming you need a lot of this stuff. It comes in a big rolled up piece in a box but I'm not sure how long the piece is. I'll get the specs tomorrow and order some. What's a decent price for this stuff?

The first 20 sheets of drywall arrived so I can get started.

i got some backer rod from here

http://www.loghelp.com/backerod.html

these prices are better than home depot.

HD sells 30 feet of 3/8 for around $4, while this place sells 100 feet for $5.

the shipping was kind of a lot because of the bulk. i bought 1000 feet of 1/4 and the shipping was around $14 (almost added 50% to the cost) ... it was shipped on a cardboard spool in a large box.

but service was good and delivery prompt

i may get some 3/8 from them too.

hth

Great stuff! You should add your experience with the seller to your post in Building Products about those guys. 8)

Thanks Dan,

That gives me some idea of what to expect when they phone tomorrow with the price.

The Home Depot here didn't even know what I was asking aboput when I asked for backing rod. They apparently didn't have it .

Frank, according to this page (and others), "Storage matters. Store drywall panels flat on the floor to prevent bending or breaking."

Thanks Dan,

This forum is unbelievable for the amount of help I've received in a very short time. I know some of the questions are too obvious but if you don't get them answered it just brings things to a standstill sometimes. So thanks again for all the input.

No problem, Frank -- we're just overwhelmed with guilt from all the free advice we've received here, so now we're "paying it forward" whenever we can!

I got a price on the backing rod. 2000 ft for $85.00 Can. Sounds OK to me. I'm not sure I'll need all of it but I'd rather have a bit too much than a bit too little.

I got started doing the beef-up of my outside walls. It's good to get something done!

Also, Keith I layed down my drywall as your link suggested. Thanks for that.

I'm off to Whitehorse NWT for a few days. See you later.

Frank

Here's some pics.

Looks like just four screws holding up each panel. I'm thinking more screws would make the panels more rigid and join the drywall to the plywood so that they behave as one. Anyone else agree with me?
