I thought i would pass on a tip, i get enough off the net....8^)
I have a small room, 11 by 11 foot with 8 foot ceilings.
It had horrendous problems with bass response (none). I cured a lot of probs, with acoustic foam, like absorbtion over the console, side walls, rear wall etc (minimising reflections and reducing the reverb time a tad) the bottom end was still a problem.
I was going to build a couple of the helmhotz type bass traps, after i priced the commercially available ones...8^)
in the short term, though, i went to a hard ware store and bought 4 bags of insulco insultation, cost me 160 AUD.
I stood them one on top of each other in the rear corners of the room. They extend from ceiling to floor on both sides, then i wrapped em in black cloth (for looks).
The improvement they made was nothing short of remarkable. Now i am not for one second suggesting these are better than what you could build as on the SAE site, or Ethan Winers version, nor am i saying they are better than the commercially available produts.
What i am saying, is , i could have returned them and got my money back as long as i didnt open the bags up, and for 160 bucks, they made enough of a difference in my room, for me to be happy.
At this stage, i have no plans to replace them. The acoustic foam and these bass traps, sensible placement of monitors and equipment have gotten my room to where i can mix and they translate well on other systems, and IMHO, thats what its all about.
take care
Peter
