Great information. Does it make sense to put thick gobos directly behind the monitors to stop the rear reflection?

yes, having some gobos in strategic places around the desk and monitors should help but you will still want treat the walls and ceiling to ensure a proper overall room response.

There is always a balance between specialization and usability. After a certain point, you are essentially putting more cost, effort, and limitations for increasingly marginal gains. Unless you intend to use it for high end professional purposes, erring a little on the side of broad-use to keep the music room open shouldn't be a real problem.
