I ordered an SPL meter today from Long and McQuade in Vancouver.
This one: Galaxy Audio CM140
I have a question. I want to ensure that the soundproofing I am planning to do is adequate for what I intend to use the room for as I stated in my first post.
What types of readings should I be taking to assess my room and environment?
Thanks,
Frank

Since isolation from the studio to the upstairs is a big concern, I would take measurements with the SPL meter from full on playing of instruments in the studio from directly above the studio upstairs. Also, it probably wouldn't hurt to measure any intrudiog sounds coming in to the studio. These numbers will help you know what you need to build in order to reach your goal. I think C weighting is geared more towards musical instruments and A weighting is more for higher frequency sounds, but it can't hurt to take measurements on both settings just to be safe. Hope this helps a little bit.

Sounds good( or not as the case may be). I suppose I'll have to get measurements on the intruding sounds from the outside as well. Maybe I can teach my neighbor's dogs to bark on command. I know!.... I'll hire the mailman for a couple hours to walk by and get them going.cyeazel wrote:Since isolation from the studio to the upstairs is a big concern, I would take measurements with the SPL meter from full on playing of instruments in the studio from directly above the studio upstairs. Thanks I'll check this stuff out when I get the unit. I'll read the manual and make sure I understand how to use the meter.cyeazel wrote:I think C weighting is geared more towards musical instruments and A weighting is more for higher frequency sounds, but it can't hurt to take measurements on both settings just to be safe.
As usual it's a great help. Thankyou very much.cyeazel wrote:Hope this helps a little bit.

I finally got back to work on this project. I've put the backer rod around all the gyproc pieces and have started putting the acoustic sealant on. What a mess that stuff is. I find it hard to apply evenly and smoothly. Does anyone have any tips?
I also have another question. Since you can't paint over this sealant what do you cover it with after you do the final layer of drywall?
Thanks as always.

maybe by the time you get to the final layer you will be using a different brand of sealant
seriously, you don't have enough for your whole project do you? you will be buying more maybe?
some ARE paintable and easy to apply. try to get USG or Miracle, 2 i have used that are easy to apply and (i'm pretty sure) are paintable ... i'll double check that.
otherwise i think people put a wood moulding that covers MOST of the gap without bridging the gap, and then that hides the mess. that might work.

Thanks for the reply Dan,
I haven't been able to find those 2 brands up here yet but I'll keep looking. If not I'll probably have to go across the border and get some, which is not too big a deal as I live 10 blocks from the US border.
You're right, I don't have very much of this stuff right now so I'll definitely be buying more.
I guess on the final layer I'll only be doing the perimeter of the walls so it won't be that big a deal to put moulding over it.
Thanks again,
Frank
