Ground-up studio build in Perth

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Some progress shots.. the walls are going up steadily. The first wall I made was 3600mm long and had 6 sheets of the 16mm gyprock on it. It took three of us pretty big bloke to lift it so I decided to make them half the size - much more manageable. The air conditioning is going in mid-next week, so once that's installed I can get that wall finished and the ceiling can go in!

looking good there mate, and it takes me back to that time in my build looking at your pics. It looks almost identical to mine at that point 8)

And yep, they're goddamn heavy walls aren't they!!

the only thing I can't see from the pics is whether the walls are either dyna-bolted or at least concrete nailed to the slab.

looking really good there and it's great to see you makig progress with the build :D

all the best,

Steve

The 'plates' that the walls are sitting on are indeed dynabolted to the slab and the the bottom plate of the stud walls are screwed and nailed to the plates. They're not going anywhere!

Update time: Most of the framing has been done, air conditioners are installed, ceiling joists are in the live room, door frames are roughed in.
Next up: cable to run for power points and lights, door frames to be hung properly ready for the doors to be hung, glass to be ordered, flooring to be ordered. The ceilings will be hung when the cabling is run.
I'm pretty happy with how it's progressing, I have 2 weeks solid of my wife being home until she goes back to work and I start my new job - full-time Dad! Work will slow down considerably when I'm looking after our 7-month old all day, but it's worth it. :D
Anyway, back to the ol' nail gun!

Wheww,

It's been a while since my last update (almost 4 months, yikes!) but there has been significant progress. Both ceilings are done, I hung a couple of doors, the flooring has gone down in the live room, material has been selected and bought for the wall coverings and the trim is almost complete for the windows which arrive on Saturday. Once the windows are in I'll have a good idea of both how the live room sounds when I get some drums in there and how soundproof it is. The seals are due to arrive for my doors next week so once they're all sealed up it'll be very exciting.

All the gyprocking is done anyway, if I never see another sheet of that crap it'll be too soon!

Till next time, hopefully I'll update this more often..

Sam.

Just looking back at those photos, I forgot to mention that the cabling has gone in too. I've run HDMI, MIDI, USB plus heaps of CAT6 as well as 24 analogue microphone inputs plus a bunch of returns split into 12/6/6 multicores. I have access to the roofspace pretty easily too so if I need to add more later on I can. All the electrical/lighting cable has been roughed into the walls as well.
