I have a 25 year old much loved pair of JBL 4411 studio monitors on which the foam surround on the bass drivers has perished.
I have been given a quote of between $240 and $250 to repair or a non JBL
replacement driver for $300 per side.
What I want to know is what is the best thing to do.
I have also looked at both passive and active nearfilds (Tannoy Reveal 6 / Event TR8) but not shure if I can handle the transition to (Toy speakers) after the JBLs I also use a set of 12" Infinity.
I dont mix for any commercial use just my own amusement and the torture of friends and family.

If the rest of the cabinet and components are in good shape, I would have the woofers (both) reconed. You can't just put any old speaker in there and have them sound right. Make sure the shop uses origional JBL parts (have them keep the recone boxes to show you), as there are some aftermarket parts around. You should get another 20 years out of them if re-coned properly. The kit that is used is a C8R128H, and the price they quoted is in line... JBL parts are fairly expensive.
