Hello all,
i was wondering if it's possible to installl recessed lighting housings with double layer 5/8" drywall.
I'm planning to use Halo H99ICT housing.
the lip only extends 1/2" from the surface of the housing. Does code allow me to install it without meeting the edge of the drywall?

Check with your local city/town/county electrical building codes.

The electrical code does not allow you to install anything not in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
The unit is adjustable - however it is only designed for a maximum 1" thick ceiling.
So if your ceiling was 2 layers of 1/2" it would be OK - but 2 layers of 5/8 would not be approved by the manufacturer - and thus not acceptable by code.

recessed in RC ceiling

So is it possible to put in recessed lighting cans in a ceiling hung on RC?
I'll only have one layer of sheetrock, but how do you avoid shorting out your whole RC with a hole in the sheet for the light, which is anchored to the ceiling joists?
any thoughts?
Thanks

David,
That is a different question all together.........
I don't penetrate the ceiling for this purpose - what I prefer to do is to box out the recess where the light goes - large enough to maintain the minimum clearances required by the lighting manufacturer - wrap my drywall around this to maintain the integrity of my system - and then penetrate this with only the cable.
You can then caulk the cable penetration and the light itself is completely on the room side of the isolation assembly.
Then it's one layer of drywall at the opening to blend it all back in together.
Simple neat and easy...........

Ok, so this makes sense, but then do you 'hang' those boxes for the recessed cans on RC? otherwise... you're back to the same place, right?
What I'm imagining you're saying is that instead of screwing the light housing into the ceiling joists ( is it joist, or joyce?) and then cutting a hole in the sheetrock, as you'd otherwise do, you essentially build a cavity in the RC'd ceiling for the light. But how does this attach?
Still confused. Thanks
