"Baffles", to put against soundsources for dead room/record

Post by Jasi91 »

Hey there. I'm up for doing my own homestudio.
Just a mixer left and some cables, but i already have enough really to record and such.
And already up soon with my first tune :D HAPPY!
But here's the deal, My room where i record is my bedroom, and i don't like the acoustic.
So when i'm recording i will need some "deadening" (?) screen in front of it.
It've worked, but not enough. So i've "designed" a baffle like screen to put up in front of the soundsource.
I'm gonna have a 1x1 m large "wall" that have been cut into smaller piecec 2 small 25 cm x 100 cm on the side,
and a 50 cm x 100 cm piece in the middle, like a folding wall. I will either have MDF board, 3-layer plywood, chipboard (?), or any similar or if you guys know any else good board? And on top of that i want some good "deadening" material that absorbs.
I've checked out some materials, but all the cheap ones are only 30 mm maximum, don't think that's enough for that thing?
And the more thicker ones only come in packages for like 500 bucks or something (don't know i'm from sweden here it's ca 5000 SEK). So i've thought about some other materials, I've checked the rockwool thing, it work but i can't have it in here cause the wall will be to "big". So i've checked one other material also. Mattresses! Some have those wavy front and plane back, that i can glue onto the board, but could that work? if i take a hard mattress?
I'll show in this pic what kind i mean
Will THIS work as a absorbing material?! Or any other suggestion.. I Do have some rockwool insulation in the garage i guess.

What is the purpose of the screen, and what are you recording? It sounds like what you want to do is to build a gobo. Is that the idea? Search the forum for "gobo" and you should find several examples of how to do it right.
And on top of that i want some good "deadening" material that absorbs.
Fiberglass or mineral wool are ideal. At least 7cm, probably 10cm thick is what you need. Owens Corning 703 would work great, if you can get it where you are.
I've checked the rockwool thing, it work but i can't have it in here cause the wall will be to "big".
I don't undertand what you mean by " you can't use because it is big". It HAS to be big! It must cover the entire surface of your gobo, at least 7 cm thick. No matter what you use, it will be big! If you don't like the way it looks, then cover it with acoustic cloth!
So i've checked one other material also. Mattresses!
That won't work. Mattress foam is most likely closed-cell, but for acoustic absorption you need open cell. IT looks the same, but isn't.
but could that work? if i take a hard mattress?
Nope! It isn't a matter of how hard or soft the mattress is: it is about the microscopic structure of the foam itself. IF ti is closed cell foam, it will not work. Closed cell foam has no useful acoustic properties. Only open-cell foam will work. Proper acoustic foam is open cell, not closed cell. Packing foam, mattress foam, upholstery foam, and similar are practically always closed cell, and not much use for acoustics.
I Do have some rockwool insulation in the garage i guess.
Yep, rockwool will work fine. But use the search feature to find out how to build your gobo.

That's pretty much exactly the thing i was gonna build.
Guess i didn't really know what it did.. This will do what to the sound?
