New to Acoustics and Forum Need Guidance

Post by Fyre »

Hello Forum,

This is my first post and id like to start by saying that I really do like this forum as there is a wealth of information here. I am pretty much all around into music and the creation of music. I started build my first studio at 12 years old now 23 I specialize in production and vocal recording. I am also a writer and aspiring artist in the beginning stages of starting my own record label. That’s enough about myself onto the reason for the post.

I am looking into some acoustic treatment for my recording/control room. I have done a lot of research into the topic and decided to go with Roxul Safe and Sound found at Lowes. After reading (http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm) it shows that safe and sound is a good acoustic absorber down to 125HZ(where it falls to .52). Panel design here (http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... =3&t=10297).
I was also thinking to come up with some type of system to where I can attach the panels to a type of railing and have tracks going along the walls so that I can slide the panels where I want them during mixing and recording.

I use my room mostly for mixing and vocal recording I like the sound of recording vocals in a live room so I’m not looking to make my room completely dead just better sounding. The rooms dimensions are W – 10ft 10in L – 15ft H – 8ft. The panels come in 3inch depth and after approx 1.5ft by 4 ft. I was thinking to double 8 panels and make 6 inch thick bass traps for the corners and individual panels for the flat walls. With 3 bags of the roxul that gives me 8 6 inch traps for the corners and 20 3 inch traps for the remaining walls. I was also thinking to make a cloud with 3 of the remaining panels directly above the mixing position. The remaing panels would be distrubted around the room (which is what I need help with. My question is would think be 1. adequate treatment for a room this size? 2. Is the Roxul a good replacement for 703 or 705 which is twice as expensive? 3. What would be the best placement for the remaining 17 panels?

welcome! it sounds like enough absorption to get started. usually, trap all the corners of the room and the first reflection points, between the monitors on the front wall, the front of the desk, and on the back wall. on the ceiling - scatter the absorbers so you have some space between them. this will help in making it more diffusive.

Thanks for the quick response... after more thinking on the topic I now realize that by using an additional 4 batts of the roxul I should have enough material to do floor to ceiling superchunks in all corners... my question is should I do the super chunks in the corners or continue with my previous plans and do floor to ceiling bass traps with an airgap between wall and trap and use the additional traps for some extra mid-high absorb?
