Hey guys, I just got my shipment of Roxul AFB 3" 2.5PCF insulation. I live in San Diego and the people from Insulation Wholesalers in Pomona delivered it to me for only $25. They charged me roughly $.30 a sq ft. The number there is 800-203-4237 The keep this stuff in stock. The also carry Roxul SAFE at $.78 a sq ft, also in stock.

Sorry if I'm a dork, but is this stuff the equivilent of 703, or 705? I am trying to find out by reading and browsing. . . but I'm slow

I'm in SoCal, not far from Pomona, at that price I can do my whole studio for under $300. Hmmm...

there is a slight absorption diff at 125Hz with the 2" product, the 4" product is extremely close in abosrption. Like NRC of 1.05 vs NRC of 1.04.

I am like many others, converting garage into studio, can I use it inside the frame of my outer walls, as well as build diffuser/absorber panels for inside my finished walls with the Roxul?

You sure can. and it saves you a ton of money. Just have to cover it nicely. it is not as sturdy as 703. (the Semi-Rigid Rockwool)

Regarding replacing the 705 with Roxul in the frame cavities: would this be a worthwhile endeavor? I don't plan to go to the extremes outlined in the first post,(specifically the floor) but I want the best isolation from outside sound for the money.

Another stupid question: Will the roxul also be an effective thermal insulator? It gets purty hot down heeyah!

Yep it is definitely a worthwhile endeavor. And a money saver.

My CR stays pretty cold if I leave the CPU off. The Live room stays darn cold on them 90 degree days as well. So I would say it works as a good insulator.

Of course make sure you provide some kind of A/C as the heat that it keeps out of your room is also the BODY and equipment heat it keeps in

So is 3" recommended for a typical cavity or is 3.5" better? It shouldn't be packed too tightly so I figure 3".

So it won't stand up on its own - but it shouldn't be affixed anywhere inside the cavity should it? So its a matter of just covering it with wall materials so it doesn't flop down?

What is the avg. per sq. ft. price difference to 703 or 705 rigid?

PS - how do you measure up all the cavities and determine the square footage of a) rigid or b) roxul since its priced in square footage?

I don't know if you got your answer, but what I did was this. L X W of each wall/floor/ceiling to get SQ ft. Then just add it up!
