Building a new Studio! Critique my design

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Building a new Studio! Critique my design

Post by hear-this »

Hello! I'm building a new production room / recording studio in an old warehouse, and would love to get feedback on my design. I am still in the design phase, but I'm ready to start building asap.

INFO ABOUT THE BUILDING:
- The ceilings and floors are cement.
- The ceilings are 12', but our current plans for flooring will reduce that by ~0.5"

INFO ABOUT THE PROJECT:
- We're building two rooms:
-- a 'Production Room', which will mostly be used for making music for films
-- a 'Video Stage', which beyond shooting video, can be used as a 'live room' in conjunction with the 'Production Room'
- These rooms will be side by side, collectively stretching across 40', and sharing a width of 23'
- The self-imposed limitation of the 'production room' is 19', but we're trying to keep it under 17.5'

I'm mostly concerned about the production room, as 90% of the recording (and all mixing) will happen there.

Notes on the attached drawings for proposed plans:
- in the drawing with the blue room, the orange room (labeled 'Velidoxi Studio') is the 'Production Room'
- the other drawings are two proposed designs for the production room

My biggest concerns are:
- there's traffic noise outside the windows
- I can't get an 'ideal' rectangle ratio because the walls would need to go where the upper window is
- ...so which design would you all recommend??
- OR is there a better design I haven't thought of
