What's the min distance needed behind the mix spot, you should have to use a diffuser on the rear wall??? I remember maybe reading it on here somewhere???

According to Peter D'Antonio of RPG about 10 feet minimum. Wes Lachot says he's used diffusion as close as 8 feet behind the mixer's ears. Any closer than that and you're probably better off with absorption.

I have a bit over 8' of space. I may try a small diffuser out.

The question is right as far as it goes. Diffusion should be more than three times the lowest frequency wavelength difused distant to give a diffuse field. The ten foot guideline is from the RPG recomendations which correspond to theit product performance. Teh expalnation is in D'Antonio's papaers, but not highlighted.

If you like the sound of diffusion, but you don't have enough room, I have always thought it might be interesting to try a couple of diffusors in a 'V' pointing out from the back wall (V as viewed from above), and then some additional diffusion along the side walls for the back third or half of the room.

Some of that energy is going to make it back to you at some point, but it'll be a) highly diffused and b) fairly late, both of which are good things.
