Alternative to mass loaded vinyl barrier

Hello,

I'm new to the forum, which I have found to be an amazing resource. I am building a home studio in my NYC apt. I live the second floor of a converted warehouse building. The floors are hardwood with tin ceilings and offer little in the way of sound control.

I don't have much space to spare and was thinking of using Mass Loaded Vinyl Barrier for the "mass" part of the mass/air/mass formula. Thing is MLVB is pretty pricey (when you factor in shipping).

Does anyone know of a low cost alternative to Mass Loaded Vinyl Barrier?

Thanks.

Hey heavymetal,

I just went through the same thing you're going through now. I didn't want to pay $236/roll and hundreds more to have 5 rolls of the stuff shipped. So, I found a semi-local supplier that distributes to the commercial market, not the consumer market. They were cool and cut 30' rolls for me for $1.20/sf. Not only that, the guy was nice enough to drive halfway to meet me so I didn't have to pay a dime in shipping.

I guess what I'm saying is you might want to spend some time finding a place within 100 miles of yourself where you can just drive and get it.

Cheapest way of adding mass to a frame wall is more gypsum/drywall.

How About GAF TRI-PLY? I've seen repeated references to it in the forum.
