Surface-mount boxes?

Does anybody know of any surface-mount boxes (for electrical as well as audio/data) other than the wiremold stuff (tacky) and the galvanized stuff (industrial)?
How about single gang boxes? The galvanized "handy boxes" are too small to pass US code for anything except terminating a single 14 AWG cable; I need to be able to pass along 12AWG. I suppose I could install two gang boxes everywhere, but that seems excessive.
And mounting them? Putting screws through the back of the boxes and multiple layers of sheetrock into the studs?
If I want to avoid punching too many holes into my hermetically sealed rooms, I guess I'm stuck with running conduit around, though sneaking wires through small holes in the walls into the back of boxes sounds a lot more interesting than bending conduit.
I could imagine building small wooden frames that go around the industrial galvanized boxes and are held on by the faceplate; any other ideas for improving the look?
Thanks to all in advance. An amazing resource!
