Best way to soundproof this space...

This space isn't being upsed as a studio, per se, but rather as a practice space. the problem is the neighbors are seriously anal-retentive about the noise. We have this space under construction above my garage (construction starts in 3 weeks!) and I want to know what all can be done to quiet the space?
I realize this room will have a lot of problems, the first being the vaulted ceiling. unfortunately, the homeowner insists on having vaults. Also, they insist no permanent modifications- it's a "family room" first and a "practice space" second if you catch the drift.

Chippy, this is as good a "sub-forum" as any to ask the question as your query relates to construction/soundproofing more than it does to design/acoustics.

Hey. If you want to soundproof this space there is no way to get around permanent modifications. There's also no reason that those permanent modifications can't look nice. I think you've got a lot of reading to do though. Check out all of the stickies and you'll start to realize what you're getting yourself into. I'm just now finishing my studio/practice space and believe me all of this stuff you'll read is for real. It works and the people here are very nice and will help you as much as possible.

I know I didn't move this, and I doubt John did; Andre, got any more of that stuff you been smokin'??!? (Or maybe you're tryin' to unseat my record for sleep deprivation :? )

Anyway, Tim's right; for one thing, an extra layer of mass here and there won't even be noticeable once painting's done, and can help quite a bit toward isolation. If you follow the "yellow brick road" outlined by the top anouncement in this forum, it will take you to quite a few worthwhile threads to study that explain more about how isolation works. I'm a bit short on time ATM, but will try to get back to this in a day or two... Steve
