Drum Riser construction...

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Drum Riser construction...

Post by Chippy569 »

first off, i'm not building a studio, i'm building a practice space, which will also be used for scratch/reference recordings.
I'm stuck on whether or not to build a drum riser. while scanning these boards this flooring cought my eye: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewt ... &start=147. Now would building a big section of that, maybe 10' by 6' (i have a big kit) be acceptable?
also, just to see if i understand this right... i build the frame with staggering, ok. now i fill in the spaces with acoustic foam (reccomendations? cheap is good) and screw some wood over the top, and carpet it. that's all? Then put rubber feet on the supports? that would work, right? Then if I put plexiglass shielding (like the ones i've got at church!) around my kit i'm set?
the second thing I'd like to do is have a snake mounted into the riser. I'm looking for one with around 16 channels and maybe 1 return for 'phones. trouble is, it won't need to be more than 30' long. two questions here, 1) where would i find such a snake, and 2) how would I mount it in the riser?

any advice helps, thanks guys!

Well, building a drum riser kind of depends on what kind of performance you're wanting to get. Are you going for isolation here? What the drum riser effectively does is decouples that nasty kick drum, as well as the rest of the drums, from the rest of the house, room etc. If you build a riser like the one in the pictures you saw you should be in good shape, as far as riser construction goes. Epdm pucks, studs, mineral wool instead of foam, overlay, carpet, would be an acceptable design. I would wager all of this stuff has been beat to death in the rest of the forum. Just keep reading. Maybe do searches on epdm, mineral wool, drum riser etc. As far as snakes go you can buy them at just about any decent pro audio/music store. I got a nice one off ebay. Hope that clears up a little bit. Later

Don't use foam for inside a drum riser; if you float it on EPDM or neoprene you want as heavy a top as you can afford (not thin plywood) and a complete fill of insulation (fiberglass or mineral wool, NOT foam) - otherwise, you've just built a giant drum head that can vibrate at its resonant frequency with no damping.
