if anyone is looking for a source of 1/4 inch closed cell backer rod, below is a link to one i just ordered from ... i'm not sure how hard to find this is but my home depot doesn't have it anyway. seems to be in line with or cheaper than what HD would charge if they had it too.

i think that 3/8 would be too big for 1/2 inch drywall. once it is squeezed in, there won't be too much room left for caulk. we'll see how well it works in practice though :)

also has info on caulking technique

and a caulk calculator (caulkulator? :) )

Actually, HD DOES carry backer rod, you just have to know what to ask for. The packaging I bought calls it "Calk Saver" and it's in the area where they sell weather striping stuff.

They had 5/8, 1/2, and 3/8 (no 1/4).

quite right len, my post was a little unclear. my main reason for posting this was that i found a source for 1/4, which HD does not carry. they do carry the others.

also, this place is much cheaper than those little bags HD carries as you can buy in much greater bulk. i bought 1000 feet, it arrived on a spool that was mostly empty. i guess it originally had 5000 feet on it :) those HD bags have around 30 feet depending on the diameter
