As I contemplate the wall designs on my new studio, I was wondering if I could go with 24 " on center wall construction for my inner walls (only).

I am building a 28ft by 34ft by 10 ft height outer structure with roof trusses. The inner walls will be your typical freestanding (but 9 ft tall) double wall 2X4 single sided double 5/8ths sheetrock etc supporting their own ceilings with double 5/8ths sheetrock.

I would like to go 2ft on center if, all things considering, they can support the extra weight of the double sheetrock. It would save a little in cost and building time as, but I dont want to comprimise safety.

What are ya'lls thoughts?

Straight answer, probably not what you want to read.

Tehre is an acosutic isoaltion advantage to using 24". It will depend your buidling bylaws/code requirements if you can or can not do it.


In my neck of the world the underlying principle is if it meets structural strength/deflection requirements. If you are mathematically competent you can do all the calculatrions to determine what is aceptable and what is not.

Yes I had thought of that as well. My Dad is a Builder / Srtuctural Engineer, so I have him working the numbers, and checking the building code.

I did not see that this was a commonly asked question, but I was hoping someone else knew allready. There are probably too many variables to have a canned answer.

Non-load bearing, 2x4 on 24's is fine; for load bearing, if you have the space I'd probably go with 2x6's on 24" instead; no time for calculations, this is just gut feel... Steve
