I am curious if anybody believes rolled ashalt roofing is a reasonable cheap substitute for Auralex sheetblok?

I agree totally with Rod's elaborate reply
Especially since you're in the North.
Rolled roofing, in a warmer climate, CAN help when used as an intermediate layer in sound construction - but this is ONLY for SOUND performance. The stuff is about as far from FIRE proof as you can get, so it's not SAFE (even if it did meet code) - and in a COLD climate, it gets too stiff to do what it (sorta) does in warmer climates.
Bottom line - not safe ANYWHERE, and won't work AT ALLl in a cold climate. Even in a floor construction, gypsum board is a better choice for an intermediate (or extra) layer, as long as it's protected by a thick enough top layer ... Steve
