Confused about RC - too many opinions from local suppliers

Hello... this is my first post although i've searched this forum for months and hours and now i'm about to start the ceiling of my basement live room, i've read so much online material in regards to installing Resilant Channel for ceilings and everything i've read diagrams the ability of this stuff being able to support 2 layers of 5/8 drywall (even on the Auralex site it shows sheetblock in the middle of the layers on RC) but i've called at least 10 local building supply shops to ask about it and they all say that you can't do it??? it won't support that much weight, now it's possible that the people i've talked too are clueless counter staff but i even have a friend here in Windsor who works for one of the biggest drywall contractors in the area, who does all the huge commercial jobs like the Casino and Home Depot and even he said he wasn't sure it would hold that much weight???... so basically i'm scared to hang this stuff now, and confused on what to believe?, i did notice that some of the people i talked with didn't call it RC they called it "Soundbar"... i just don't want this ceiling dropping onto my head.

Also, it was suggested to me to use 1" Shaftwall/ShaftLiner instead of 2 layers of 5/8 drywall, it's not quite as thick as 2 layers of 5/8 which would save me a little on the ceiling height and weight, and I would get close to the same amount of mass (1- 2ft X 8FT sheet weights about 70 pounds), without all the additional screwing / taping / muding / Labour... it has beveled edges which id would fill with mud and i also plan on finishing the ceiling in tongue and groove pine as a finshed layer. i also have enough Sheetblock that i scooped up for an ultra- sweet deal enough to do the ceiling so i was thinking of attaching the sheetblock to the joists then, RC + 1" shaftwall + thin layer tongue & groove pine.

room details are 16 X 13 X 7.5 with 2x10 joists 16 OC...

any insight to help put my brain at ease would be greatly appreciated!

i've seen RC at Home Depot not sure if it's the knock off stuff i just read about in a search i'll have to go back and compare it to the photos and details provided by USG

Cory,

If you're nervous about RC-1 then use RC-2, it has 2 legs you can attach to the wall.

Next - what you want to do - sheetblok then RC then drywall - is not reccomended -

ALso - you will not get the performance out of 1 layer of anything compared to 2 layer of the same amount of mass......... it just doesn't work that way.

So use RC-2 and be comfortable - then one layer of 5/8 - then your sheetblok - then the 2nd layer and walk away happy.

Make sure to finish everthing along the way as described throughout many threads in here or you will be very unhappy.
