When you have a wall running perpindicular to ceiling joists facing the other rooms in your basement, how do you build the wall?

I haven't seen anything on this... Are most hanging 2 layers drywall (or whatever you choose) on your entire ceiling? What do you do if you only do the ceiling above the soundproofed rooms?

I drew a picture to show what i'm talking about. Unless I build my walls up through the ceiling joists, it will be only 1 leaf.

One leaf to WHERE, the room next door? I see the subfloor and the ceiling layers as two leaves otherwise... Steve

The picture is meant to look like what you would see if standing in my basement. So the sound travels through the first leaf of ceiling, makes a 90 degree turn and has no second leaf for people standing outside the studio in the basement.

So when you look up above the wall/entrance to studio, you will see space between joists. So the question is, do I need to put layers of drywall around the perimeter of the studio that goes up inbetween the joists?

Yup; anywhere you want to stop sound, the mass-air-mass thing applies... Steve
