Hello,

For my control room I have a 15' x 18' room to work with. The area where I live is 150' from a coal haul road, so sound isolation is important. As of right now the room has one exterior door, and one walkway that leads into the rest of the house, and two windows. The walkway side of the room (top of picture) is not too affected by outside sounds. The side of the room with the exterior door, and two windows lets in way too much noise. What I need is to decide on a design/layout (suggestions very much wanted. I have been looking through the site and am still not sure what would work well in this space.) So far Im considering taking the 3' the door requires to open, and build a new wall (the orange area in the picture) there for storage and the cpu, and to help keep some sound out.

Any suggestions?

Higgs - you'd waste 3 feet of space doing what you described. Why not build a new room within your room - a double skin will cut out the noisy trucks.

Thank you for the reply.
Well, one reason for cutting the 3 ft off was for keeping the noisy cpu in it, and for storage of cases etc. Another reason is that the exterior door opens inward, which I figured might interfere with the "room within a room" door? I in no way would rule out exchanging the door for one that opens outward if that is for the best.

I'm at a point where I have some time and money to put into this project, and have been studying up on the subject for a few months. I was quite surprised to learn how much is involved into creating a favorable acoustic space, and could use any help anybody here would care to lend.

Even with the idea I previously mentioned, floating the room has always been my intention. I suppose right now my first priority is to come up with a workable design. I have looked at many other studios/designs (especially here...GREAT SITE/RESOURCE), but can't find one that seems to work well with the door on each side of the room. Both doors are symmetrical within the room (equidistant to the ends of the room.)

Ok - let's first put your drawing on the site

Here are two design ideas I have. In the first picture I have red arrows pointing to where I think there might be a problem from the two parallel surfaces. In the second picture I have shortened the room to make the layout work better (I think.)





Am I anywhere close with these? I would like for the room to be larger, but can live with it this size if that if for the best.

I'd put the puter ina box like lee built at Lappoptop studios - he's demonstrated how to build it in his last post.

I'd also use the full width (change the door) and put storage at the rear.

Is it just me or is the scale on that drawing about as far off as it can be?

If the first picture looks about right,
Then a version of the second picture <Brians's studio> could work for you.
