Re: SIMO Studio - Construction Phase
Hi there,
sorry to push my post forward again…
I know Glenn you already responded to this, but I'm still a confused on how can I make the two soffits with equal absorption but at the same time having hangers behind just the right soffit? Won't this make that soffit more absorbent that the left one?
Sorry, but could you elaborate on that when you get a chance please?
…also, still having difficulties finding soft fibre board (160 Kg/m3) for the hangers core here in UK…I searched on the Building Materials part of the Forum with no luck…could anyone point me in the right direction (to find it or for alternatives) please?
Many Thanks

Re: SIMO Studio - Construction Phase
the symmetry on the LF will be offset due to the differences but you need LF absorption so you have to do what you can the mids and HF tend to be the most impacting so your wall and ceiling symmetry will be most critical in your tradeoffs. look for cellulose board - lighter is OK. if not, a lightweight plywood - 3mm could be used.

Re: SIMO Studio - Construction Phase
Hi there,
it's been a while since my last post, and the construction has slowed down a bit…. well, I've been quite busy at the studio where I work so can't really complain as that helps financing the project as well as keeps me in the loop …but I wish I was much more further down the line with the build as i seem soooooo freaking distant from the finishing line…
….oh well…head down and onwards we go !
Time for me to post some pics of where I am at:
1) Rear bass traps (that will house acoustic hangers): ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Rear sloped wall (between the two corner bass traps):
This is around 18-20 degrees splayed from the front wall.
A couch riser will (more than likely) go between the corner traps so I decided to start splaying it upwards from a bit above where I figured out the couch's higher point will be (as I guess/hope the couch will act as an additional trap for low mid frequencies
).
I'm still undecided if this rear sloped wall should be:
a) a slot resonator ?
b) superchunk ?
c) a mix of slot resonators and superchunk ?
d) more (possibly too small) hangers ?
Any suggestions extremely welcome (as usual) !
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Speaker soffits:
These follow John's design (or at least I hope so) and at the moment are just temporary attached to the lateral walls. I still need to install the hangers in the cavity beside the right soffit and so I need to be able to move that soffit out of the way in order to gain space to maneuver the hangers inside there
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4) Inner leaf ceiling:
This is made out of five inside out pieces.
At the present I just made the framing and then leant them on top of the walls.
I will later take them down one at the time and install the gyprock on their back and then lift them back up in position.
I will bolt them to each other and caulk between where the pieces meet. BUT before doing that I'm waiting to finish the framing of the live room walls as well.
This is primarily because I desperately need to get rid of as much material as possible, in order to re-gain some floor space… you know, working in the same (small) place where all the stuff is stored had made the whole experience much more difficult that what it was already !
Secondly, I (still !) need to figure out what to do with my HVAC systems, which will very likely have silencers installed between the ceiling beams.
I have to admit that I'm really dreading this step as I know very little about it and I'm a bit confused !!
Comments? Suggestions? Insults?
Thank you very much in anticipation !

Re: SIMO Studio - Construction Phase
terrible, terrible! you need to start over!
actually it's looking good. i'd just go with absorption on the back sloping wall. you could add some widely spaced slats there later to increase some of the HF energy in the room.

You have a sheathed upper ceiling,,we have to assume a floor space above that with a coupled leaf.

Re: SIMO Studio - Construction Phase
Thanks so much Glenn ! Much appreciated (especially coming from you man !)
I'll definitely follow your advise on the back sloping wall.
Thank you for your reply Brien.
Unfortunately I have to admit I'm having trouble understanding your statement - sorry
Could you please elaborate on that if you get the chance. Grazie

Re: SIMO Studio - Construction Phase
Hello
Yesterday I finished and raised in position the first wall of the Live room (my back hurts !!!). Pics to come !
Now I'm a bit undecided on how to do the second wall (the one with the window).
Here are the 3 options I'm considering:
Option 1: Option 2: Option 3: At the moment I'm more inclined towards option 2, as it seems to waste less floor space (a slight difference - I know - BUT every inch (or centimeter) counts, right?
) and to give me a greater gap between the inner and outer windows.
…BUT….
What do you think??
If you could give me your opinion that would be great, as it will help me decide which way to go !
Many Thanks as usual
