I have a pair of B&W CDM 1 speakers that are not sheilded. Until I have funds to buy something else I would like to use them as monitors. Can I use them near my video monitor? How much distance should I leave from speaker to video monitor to prevent damage?
Thanks.

a CRT is basically aLARGE tube. the front of the screen attracts the electrons from the rear of the tube. (all magnetic)
When you place a magnet near the CRT it deflects the stream of electrons (hence the discoloration) if the magnet stays near the CRT long enuff it will remagnetize the grid at the front of the screen (polarization grid) that attracts the electrons.
Why is an LCD safe. No magnetically sensitive parts. Liquid Crystal Display has tons of FIXED pixels. They are either on or off. The magnets cannot affect this operation. Liquid is not sensitive to magnetism like the electrons in a CRT.
I hope I made that simple enuff.
I skipped a lot of deeper tech talk

Here's a way to use your CRT til cash gets mo betta -

Place the speakers on the shield units, with the steel plates toward the video monitor - slide the speakers toward the monitor til you see distortion in the picture, or until the speakers are close enough together to form an equilateral triangle with the BACK of your head - I've not had any problem placing speakers within a couple inches of a 21" CRT using this method.
