Hi all,
I detailed in another thread the construction plans I'm using (and modifiying, thanks to input). I forgot to ask one question.
due to budgeting constraints, I'm going with standard insulation from Home Depot or the like. What rating and what size should I use in the 2x4 studded walls and the ceiling joists? I've heard some say you want to fill the cavity, others say you should leave an air gap...
Thanks!

Hmmm Are you really saving that much buy going with the pink stuff over rockwool/AFB?
Personally for the wall between the control room and the live room I think it would be a waste of money to spend (seemingly) less to save a couple of bucks.
i did it and then ended up pulling out the pink stuff and putting in the Roackwool. much better results
The AFB offers improved LF damping that the pink stuff only dreams about
Now for everywhere else, grab some R-19 so you can compress it a bit
R-13 is not dense enuff ( but 1st compare the R-19 cost to the AFb cost. it isnt that far off
like a couple of bucks or so.)

Hi Bryan,
I was considering R11 so as not to fully fill the walls. Now you've got me thinking.
In my case, my control room is my live room (home studio ya know
). Eventually, I'll invest in accoustical treatment for the room, but for now the construction is all about sound containment. I need to find out more about this rockwool. Can it be bought anywhere, or is it the type of item that needs to be special ordered? If this won't work for me, do you recommend R19 in the walls and ceiling?
Thanks,

Check w/ your local builder supply places. The companies that sell to contractors. Someone should have it nearby. Usually places that sell only insulation, or other building materials such as drywall or steel studs. Usually a commercial supplier will stock some. If need be, you can contact someone at Roxul to see who is the closest distributor of it...

You want the AFB product. I'm paying about $16.00 for 3". 64 SF per bundle. Comes in a green bag.

I'll try and let you know how this turns out...

To locate a local roxul dealer/distributer, just phone 1-800-265-6878 (sales @ roxul) during normal business hours. It's a lot faster than the website, and you don't have to give any personal information.
ROXUL INC. 551 Harrop Drive, Milton, Ontario L9T 3H3
Tel: 905 878-8474
These phone numbers and addresses are on the bottom of ever technical PDF on the roxul website.
