Acoustical advantage/disadvantage to using vapor barrier?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Acoustical advantage/disadvantage to using vapor barrier?

Post by nmk85roll »

Hey guys,

So my local building code doesn't require a vapor barrier. I'm working with a pre-existing framed basement which is supporting part of the 1st floor so it needs to stay. This framing has a vapor barrier installed over the insulation. I will have to build my inner leaf wall 1" inside this pre-existing framing as you see in the picture below. Considering the vapor barrier should go on the warmer leaf, I need to take it down. And if I chose, I can reapply it after I construct the inner wall before putting up the drywall. So, is there any acoustical advantage/disadvantage to vapor barriers? Normally I would guess the foil would reflect high frequencies, but considering it would be covered with drywall I'm guessing that is inconsequential.
