Need help building drum risers?

Thanks Eric, Always willing to be corrected, and Many apologies Aaron. I will always admit I dont know it all.

Heck Iwas listening to a mix on the new Breaking Benjamin CD and I love the Placement of those gtrs in So Cold. what I really like is the placement of the Kick in the mix

makes me go back to the lab for this rock tune I gotta mix

Anyway.....

A lot of what I do has been learned over 24 years of Trial and Error and the few egg heads who could sit me down and give me theory.

And of course all them books I read when i was learning this junk as a teen.

This will be added to my lists of lessons Learned . Geez i love debate cuz you walk away educated.

And As always I had to struggle through your theory post eric but I did understand it. LOL. Glad to know you are still around, oddly enuff I was praying that you would come on in and interject in theis post. When my wife does her European tour next year I gotta take the time out to meet you.

I just hate thinking too hard, I'd rather just mix. LOL

What would you use on the surface of a drum riser? Would it just be left as plywood? Carpet maybe?

Well cvarpet makes sens as you dont want the kit to slide and we end up throwing a rug under the set anyway.

Just my 2 cents.

LOL. Funny. My wife is one woman I have never had to worry about. She gets hit on so much it's comical.

She is one Woman who understands the Love layed out in the Bible. Wifes Love Your OWN husbands.

So yeah WE will both meet you unless you want the karate kick to the groin she is good at giving guys. LOL

Built the drum riser yesterday. Was originally planning to pour a concrete slab but after reviewing that I needed to mix around 40 quickrete bags and thinking about how much mess and potential problems that was going to create - I went with a different design.

Frame - MDF top and bottom, sitting on pucks, filled with Dry sand. Sand weighs about 60% the weight of concrete - so it's pretty heavy.

The drums sound awesome - it's like the kick is a whole new kick drum. Johns advice for treatment in the drum area was right on the money - Words can't describe how happy I am with the sound of the drums in the room.

Hey Andrew, thanks for pointing out in a not so subtle way the joy of an ENCLOSED drum riser and how beautiful it makes a Kick Drum Sound

Ever raise kids....I've got 9 and I am sane and they are very well disciplined. No Jail birds or drug users in this bunch.

That reasoning is not really valid isn't it?
Andrew's very nice riser is almost a massive damped block filled with sand. So His mass-spring lies immense lower than the original discussed design with wool filling.

The theory still fits experience, but you should analyse the parameters of the equation.

Andrew's design is hardly to be compared with the original we spoke about, but as Andrew said is an adapted version of the concrete slab.

(If I had a cheese grin. LOL) Perhaps so, but even with the design variation he is in a wonderful position to experience the joy I get when I record a kick on an enclosed stage. regardless of the damping material used.

Ultimately what matters to me is the tone I get. I am arecording/mix engineer before I am a novice experimental designer so TONE rules baby!!!.

ok, you've totally lost me here. If you we're considering pouring a concrete slab, why not just put carpet down on the concrete floor? What difference does the riser make?

I could have put the drums on the concrete floor & I'm sure it would have been ok, but the riser has several purposes :

- Further isolates the drums from the building to add increased sound reduction to the outside and between rooms - remember the riser is sitting on neoprene pucks
- Raises the drummer so he is closer to eye level with the other people playing
- Looks cool

Hey andrew i knew your point was not as I stated, However, I used your findings to point out the point I was attempting to make. (Not that in the grand scheme of things that it matters) but it illustrates what I was after. with regards to the TONE you get in your kick drum.

Which bottom line was my point.

But then again who cares as long as the final result is the same, a great recording environment.
