What is wrong with my hearing (monitors)

Post by O-Jay »

Hope you don't see this as yeat another 'what monitor should I buy'-thread but I really need some advice.

I have built the EFE AR.com diy speakers as sold by Madisound, and it is my feeling that they have a reasonably flat response. Most of my records sound really good and detailed. But for mixing/tracking they really don't help me much.

I also have some modified JBL 4311 monitors and they are far from flat. Ephasized bass thump and a rising upper midrange response. They sound great on older material but terrible on many contemporary recordings. Still, it is much easier to mix and decide on subtle EQ changes.

I have been under the impression that monitors should be flat but now I'm in doubt. What is wrong with me? :)

Any input is appreciated.

A good monitor should be flat. As to remain a neutral presenter of your sound.

Everything else after that is YOU training YOUR EARS to get a good mix.

Which means regular listening on YOUR monitors till YOUR ears are trained to what GOOD sound is on your monitors. And when you mix making consistent references till YOUR ears are trained.

Good monitors only reveal the truth. never more than that. If they are hyped they are being deceptive.
