Soffit Construction

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Hey thanks Andrew, thats exactly what I needed. Now it is very clear. I knew what barefoot described but wasn't sure what you were doing different. Sounds like an excellent idea. And I bet those angles and clearance for the box WERE the most demanding of all the construction projects. How did you arrive at these angles, and then lay them out? I figured I would run a straightline board from where each speaker driver center is SUPPOSED to be, to a post at ear height about 18" behind the engineering position, and square off and plumb from those, and then figure angles. Compound miters are such fun  Especially with EXPENSIVE VENEERED panels!

Did you POST VENEER the wood on the baffles, or cut the baffles from pre-veneered ply?
And a couple of other questions. About the slot absorbers between the monitors. How deep is it Andrew?
And are those bass absorber hangers below the monitors? Thanks again.

I used smartdraw to design the angles. I laid out the speaker positions to find the mix point. Then I put a chair at the mix point and had my wife measure from the floor to my ears. Then using smartdraw with a 10degree line I found the exact height for the monitors.

The frame was covered in 3/4 MDF and then the wood went on top of that. It was 5 inch pine strips glued to the MDF and then sanded with an orbital sander and stained. It looks quite nice.

The absorber between the monitor is quite deep - including the depth of the inside out wall, it's about 11 inches deep. Remember to completely seal that box from the soffits eother side. I brought forward the middle absorber because without it the angles from the soffits crossed at the top (ie the soffits met each other). By bringing it forward a bit you pull forward the soffit angles and it looks a lot better - hope that makes sense. At the time this was a major head scratcher.

The cloth area under the monitors covers the hangers. There are 4 hangers in each soffit.

There are some threads on this site that really helped me (basically without them I would have been really up the creek without a paddle) - several of them are by Dave Blauvelt - he posted some very useful drawings.

I listened to my events for a long time un soffited and they sound great- but they were absolutely no comparision to the sound of the events in these soffits. The sound is really incredible - when you hear that "3rd" speaker in the middle you'll be really glad you went through the hassle and head scratching to build the soffits. Plus of course they just look kick ass too.

Ok Andrew, thanks. I have mine laid out in Autocad, but the physical layout is what I was wondering about. I don't have the depth you have for the middle slots, and I am sloping a ceiling panel down to it also. A cloud dies into that sloped panel too. Looking forward to building the soffits. I don't have real quality monitors yet(absolute Zero's  ), but even they SHOULD sound better. I really want to get a pair of the Events myself. Thanks for the replys.
