How much drywall on RC ceiling?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

How much drywall on RC ceiling?

Post by gdgross »

Greetings folks. I've got my walls finished! (Well, except for caulking the space between the last wallboard layer and the concrete slab floor...) 1 layer of ½" OSB and 1 layer each of 5/8" and ½" drywall, all mounted on RC. It is that 'dual-leg' RC that looks like hat channel, but according to my research is indeed 'resilient' channel, though perhaps not quite as resilient as the normal stuff.

Anyway, I want to know if I can hang the same wall scheme on my ceiling? Is a layer of OSB and 2 layers og drywall too much for the RC? I have already talked with an enginner I know and he feels it will be no problem for the ceiling joists. In fact, he indicated I could probably add 1 MORE layer of drywall with no problems.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

The dual leg stuff should hold that weight no problem - if your joists are on 16" centers, then put the RC no further than 24" centers, making sure to add an extra run where the first layer's 4 foot dimensions meet so that each sheet has RC every 2 feet - if your joists are 24" centers, then the RC should go on 16" centers.

If you were to use the single leg stuff, I'd add one more per 4' of ceiling to take the extra weight... Steve

Thanks, Steve.

That was my suspicion, but I just wanted to double-check.
