Can't find laminated glass, is there a good alternative?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Can't find laminated glass, is there a good alternative?

Post by Smurdy »

There is a minimum order on laminated glass everywhere I go. They want to charge me over $1000 for 2-2x3 pieces. The booth has been built double-walled with the inside room floated. 2x4 wood construction with double layered drwall on the inside and outside ( 1/2 and 5/8 ) And the walls are insulated.

Here is a pic of the room

(the closet has been removed)

The window is 2x3. Will anything else work besides laminated? I record mostly foley and voiceovers. But there is a lot of screaming and hitting of metal objects.

Thanks for your time,

The neighbors probably think so. :D I do a lot of sound design for videogames. Lately I've been doing a lot of MMORPG's and thats all monsters and weapons!

DEluks, please update your profile to include a location - thanks...

If you're not sure, do a google on "foley effects" - pretty interesting stuff... Steve

Tom, have you checked on Tempered glass? Make sure you get it to size though, can't be cut once it's tempered. This stuff will still shatter (takes more to do it than standard float plate) but it shatters into small pebbles that won't cut your head off in the process...

Tom

As Steve noted, tempered will work fine. Get it as thick as you can; about 1/3 the thickness of the wall leaves is a good rule of thumb (ie, if you've got 4 5/8" DW layers, 2 1/2", try and get one 3/4" piece, or 2 3/8" pieces if you are doing a 2 pane unit.

So I finally found a place in Seattle that would do laminated glass for me. It was only supoosed to take 2 weeks , but now it's 5 weeks later and I finally got the glass.

Here is the problem, they screwed up the order and gave me 2 pieces of 1/2 inch laminate and 1 piece of 1/4 inch laminate. (instead of the 1/2 and 3/8 that I ordered)

What should I use? two pieces of 1/2 or one 1/2 and one 1/4 ??? Really don't want to deal with these guys again and I need to finish the booth.

Thanks,
Tom

Assuming 8" air space between panes, you would be looking at about STC 48 regardless of using 1/4 for one side or using 1/2" for both; using both 1/2", however, would improve the LF TL at 50 hZ by about 5-6 dB, You didn't give dimensions on your drawing, so don't know your spacing; that's why I chose 8" - for 12", the window would come in at 51 dB STC, with only about 4 dB better low end using both 1/2" glasses.

Looks like using the 1/2" on both sides would be best... Steve

Good deal, I figured as much, but didn't know if 2 of the same would make a difference. Thanks again for your help!
