semi floated floor and room hight question

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

semi floated floor and room hight question

Post by Lbc »

I am buliding a studio in the unfinished upstairs of my barn. Room hight is an issue approx 80" (unfinished). I am planning 2 layers of sheetrock on the celing. For the floor I plan on a layer of rubber then radient floor heating (the plywood with slots for the tubing kind) then a pergo finished floor with its accoicated heavy underlayment. The studio layout is r live rooms and a control room. This floor sits on a standard joists and 3/4" plywood sub floor. the walls between all rooms are double 2x4 walls with an air space and 2layers of sheetrock on the outsides. i.e the typical double wall const. method. Since I don't have the hight to do a full floating floor is there anything I could do differently to improve the floor.

I do not plan to be recording much heavy drums, mostly folk, jazz, world music. I plan on having a drum platform and amp platforms.

Can you give the rest of the details on framing, etc - spacing, depth of joists, and what you're trying to isolate from what? Steve
Soooo, when a Musician dies, do they hear the white noise at the end of the tunnel??!? Hmmmm...

"Standard joists" means little without span, spacing, etc - can you give actual dimensions of the floor joists, distance between them, and maximum un-supported spans? (Please take the time to answer ALL points listed - otherwise I have no idea what the floor can support) Thanks... Steve

Also, can you do a sketch, outside to inside, of each layer in your outer walls? That was also a bit vague.

the joists are 2x12 running parallel to the long axis of the room. Thye are 16" on center and supported by two large I beams that cross at the ends of the wall between the control romm and live room 2. Below the studio is a garage that nine times out of 10 will have no activity. my concern is more about noise getting out as i live in the country and there is not much outside noise. I will post a drawing of th outside walls as soon as i draw it. From the out side in they will be shingles, house wrap,3/4"plywood, insulated 2x6 frame, vapor barrier, 2 layers of 1/2" sheetrock.
