Quick "Bang for Buck" wallboard question?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Quick "Bang for Buck" wallboard question?

Post by JohnGardner »

If you could only afford one sheet of plaster board what one of the three following would provide the best isolation verse dollars:

13mm standard 7kg per m2 - $20 per sheet
15mm standard 7kg per m2 - $25 per sheet
13mm "noiseline" 12kg per m2 - $30 per sheet

thanks

assuming they are all the same square footage, the "noiseline" would appear cheapest. it costs more but it more than makes up for that with increased mass. and mass is the factor that matters, not thickness.

13mm standard 7kg per m2 - $20 per sheet
$2.86 per kg/m2

15mm standard 7kg per m2 - $25 per sheet
$3.57 per kg/m2

13mm "noiseline" 12kg per m2 - $30 per sheet
$2.50 per kg/m2

it seems weird that the 13mm and 15mm "standard" have the same mass/m2 ... i'd double check those numbers.

and the noiseline is nearly twice as heavy as standard ... what's in there that's so heavy?

Hi Dan,
you were right - the 15mm standard is actually 12.7kg/m2 so it looks like it's the winner at $1.96kg/m2.
Thanks
