Air vent noise in room.

I have a small vent in the room about 30cm X 30cm for central heating which makes a very bad funnel noise even when it's closed.

It's really bad when the room is really quiet. I have no control over it so I need to shut it up acoustically. I am thinking of stuffing it up with scraps of leftover foam. Is that safe? Will it melt or burn while in there or leave a stench or bad smell?

If I build a panel for it and mount it on top of it, will it be safe again and will it work. I cannot disconnect the vent from the pipes for theres a floor above me and theres no access to it.

What are my options, are there any designs out there thats a proven work?

Have you tried anything like that yet? They're pretty cheap around here at the home improvement warehouse type stores.

Does that work. Anyone tried it. I think you would still probably hear a hum due to the air hitting the magnetic cover.

How good is it from people whos actually using it. I mean when the recording light is on, everything can be easily picked up by the mic. The vent is right near the mic so is this really that good?

well, you can either make inserts to plug the vent or if you do have steel vent covers, you could fashion heavy duty covers with major magnets and lots of mass.

Are any of these methods you mentioned safe. Anyone ever had like their plugs cooked when the central heating was on. The central heating get's really hot and I am worried that it might melt or burn whatever I plug in there or place infront of it.
