Does multi-layered drywall affect the acoustics INSIDE the room, or only the transmission to the outside. I don't need a soundproof situation, only acurate acoustics. Obviously with drywall at current prices, I don't want to add layers I don't need.
Oh, yeah...my details: MWM, 5-10, 160, Brown/Blue, Cape Cod, USA. Is that enough info to prevent a scolding?

From the little I know, the more layers you put up, actually will make the room sound worse.
I believe the theory is that with just one layer of drywall, the drywall will act as a bit of a bass trap, but as you add layers, the stiffness increases and the bass will reflect within the room more, which will require more treatment.
I'm sure someone who knows more than me will clarify though

It is my understanding that the more mass you put on the wall, the more sound is trapped IN the room and not transferred out to be dissipated. You therefore have to DEAL with the trapped sound bouncing around so trapping and absorbtion become the plan for the day.
Ideally if you dont have to worry about sound transer in orout of the room...I'd say "Let 'er Fly" That way you don't have to trap.
