can builders hinder future development?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

can builders hinder future development?

Post by Paulkent »

Hi guys,

I'm going to be taking occupation of a new office space that will be converted into a studio. Build is not yet complete, but normal office drywalls are going up soon. I'm just wondering whether there's anything that could easily be improved at this point in terms of isolation... (ie caulking method/type)

ie - common builders errors for isolation measures

and whether there is anything that could hinder the development of my later Room inside a room development..

any ideas? if I get in now I may be able to stop any basic silliness.

thanks.

Paul

Depends on whether the builders care what you want and will listen; I'd opt for bottom floor first of all, so you have a snowball's chance in hell of doing a decent floor; don't let them build a 2-leaf partition between you and the rest of the space, you should add the inner leaf yourself - as much headroom as you can get so you can do a sturdy inner ceiling - no interconnected HVAC ductwork (you'll need to do your own for sound control) - get enough space to include a foyer for an airlock door - and read/re-read the REFERENCE section to pick up any points I'm forgetting.

Just a start... Steve
