Closed cell foam, can cut a camping mat?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Closed cell foam, can cut a camping mat?

Post by hugo_inside »

Hi,

Definitely, I can't find "closed cell foam" sold as it. The only closed cell I found is a camping mat. Can I use it for window construction?

Thanks!

Hugo, if you´re looking for CCF for your window, the best way to find it is to use Closed Cell Backer Rod (fondo de junta), right Steve?
Backer rod is something really common (and cheap) in most drywall stores.
Good luck!

Gracias Julian, pero he preguntado en varios almacenes de materiales y no tenian nada de eso. El cristalero me ha dicho que tampoco sabe nada de esos materiales.

Thanks Julian, I asked in many construction warehouse and they don't provide backer rods and don't know about it. The glazier told me that he don't know about that material.

If you cant find Sikarod (backer rod from Sika), ask they for your nearst dealer...

btw, if you´re using the backer for sealing your rooms, for each 15mm gypsum layer you need 3/8" backer rod.
Maybe Steve can tell if you can use 3/8 for windows too.

I found something similar to closed cell foam. Rubber foam 8 mm can work? Rubber is closed cell. But it's sold as a cord. Can I use 8mm and 10 mm for selling the window glass?

thanks

Yes, as long as the "cord" is soft enough to compress by at least 1/4 or more of its thickness - seals are not for supporting the weight of the glass, only for sealing the air path. So as long as you have other, stronger, rubber for the glass to actually rest upon, then a softer, more flexible material squeezed against the glass will give a good air seal... Steve
