Stupid stupid stupid DIY laminate glass idea...

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Stupid stupid stupid DIY laminate glass idea...

Post by Deluks »

:D

So I've got all the materials required for my studio build except for the glass, I need a small-ish piece about 30'x24' and another slightly bigger for my ouiter window.

http://www.fivestardistribution.com/ Click on specialist adhesives/epoxy resin/ EP0008 (third from bottom)

Seeing that buying very thick sheets of glass can work out expensive, what would be the results of DIY-ing your very own lammy windows buy simply gluing sheets of standard glass together?

This epoxy resin stuff sets hard, is impact resistant and dries clear like glass, the only problem I can think of is that it might need full exposure to air in order to set properly.

I know that PVB (the thin plastic membrane) is used in standard laminated glass but resin is also used, I'm just not sure which type.

Ok, the end result won't be as perfect as the real thing but seeing as thin 4-6mm glass can be picked up for next to nothing it could be worth a punt.

Any ideas/experience in this field?

Hey mate, it might be cheaper to have someone in the states just mail it to ya. I bought two 24"x48" pieces, one piece of 1/2" lami and one 3/4" lami for my control room window and it only cost me about $50US total. You might want to check around to see if any of the glass shops have some scraps. The guys I bought mine from told me it was left over from a bigger project and they would give me a deal. Just a thought. Good luck. I can only have nightmares about the problems with making your own.

That's a great price for the glass, how does it perform and what airgap do you have?

I've been googling and found several links to companies that manufacture the special resin, you can cold pour it and it will cure under sunlight, if I can get hold of some I could make my own bulletproof 1½ thick glass for a fraction of the cost of the real thing. Well my only problem then will be acquiring sunlight, not much of that about in London this time of year 8)

"Bulletproof" yikes, I hope they aren't shootin at ya in your studio bro.

There is a 12" air gap between my windows which are both slightly (3deg) tilted. There is also muslin covered rigid fiberglass/rockwool between them too. As soon as the studio is up full-bore I will be posting some #'s.

Have you checked with http://www.adamsglass.co.uk to see if they have some scrap pieces they would sell you cheap? Just a thought.
