New construction advice

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

New construction advice

Post by Eddie C »

I am in the process of ordering the materials and just checking to make sure I am on the right track. This is my first HT/Practice Studio (drums) and those who have been in my shoes could imagine how important this project means to me.

Room: 21L x 13.5W x 9’H - Basement: concrete floor with kitchen above

My construction plan:

Floor – Acoustik Mat (acousticalsurfaces), one layer OSB.
Walls – Two layers of drywall 5/8 with Green Glue.
Ceiling - Two layers of drywall 5/8 with Green Glue (RSIC clips??)
Stage & riser – built on the sub floor filled with R13 and one layer OSB.

I am including a trey ceiling/Soffit with can lights because of existing gas/water pipes and duct work. I am really concerned with sound traveling to the room above (kitchen) and would like to use the RSIC-1 clips only in the ceiling. I would like to use the clips on the wall, but I can’t lose any more width.

Is this a solid plan and will the clips be of benefit if used only on the ceiling?

Thanks,

Eddie

Aloha and welcome to the forum, Eddie :D

Congrats on your studio build! Any chance you could please:
Edit your profile to include your location. This is very important, because this is a worldwide resource, and as such, material costs and availability vary widely. For example, masonry is cheaper than gypsum in some parts of the globe, whereas it's the exact opposite in other regions.
You'll probably get more of a response by doing so and this will really come in handy two or three posts down the road. It's also part of the forum guidelines: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3231 Thanks!
