IT WORKED!!!

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

IT WORKED!!!

Post by Wurlitzer »

Hi. Just stopped by to give a big thank you to everyone who helped with my studio build. The building is done now, though not treated internally yet, and the initial soundproofing results are fantastic.

Listening to recorded music, with the level cranked up well beyond what I would actually normally have, there is only a slight murmur outside. From three or four metres away, you can't hear anything above the environmental noise.

I expect it will be slightly less good with live musicians playing and a big bass amp, but it's really better than I need, so even if I lose a bit there I'm sure it will still be sufficient.

Anybody interested can check my previous threads for info on what worked. In brief: it's a purpose-built room at the end of my garden. The outer wall is 4" high density block, there's then an airgap of around 8", followed by a studwall with two layers of drywall. 4" of rockwool around all the inner walls and inner ceiling, and tons of light fibreglass insulation in the roof.

There are no windows, and the outer door has compression seals all around. I haven't even got around to sealing the inner door or really dealing with all eletrical outlets etc yet, so presumably I'll get even more isolation once I do that. I also haven't finalised the ventilation system, though the ducts are all built and don't seem to leak any sound to the outside.

I'm particularly pleased that I managed to get these results without a floating floor. I used a "split foundation" design, with the foundation laid in central slab and an outer ring, with the two leaves of the wall sitting either side of the gap. As there was some open-endedness in discussion about how well this would work, I'm pleased to say that it has surpassed my expectations.

I probably won't bother with scientific measurments, as there's no point really. Everything I need has been satisfied, so I'll leave it there. I will be back in due course though for help with acoustic treatment, I'm sure.

So THANKS! Especially to Steve and all the regulars. But also to everyone that offers their knowledge and kindness here. My neighbours will be grateful to you...

This is the kind of post that makes my day; I really appreciate you letting us know how things turned out, and I'm happy you're happy :D - I agree that you'll probably see more improvement as you finish up the little details, and we'll be here when you're ready to make it sound good.

Congratulations... Steve
Soooo, when a Musician dies, do they hear the white noise at the end of the tunnel??!? Hmmmm...
