non-studio, soundproofing bedroom windows...

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

non-studio, soundproofing bedroom windows...

Post by TomM »

I get awfully loud traffic noise through my bedroom windows and it drives me nuts.. We're not all that close to this highway, but for some reason, it gets really loud and never rests.

There's a place called http://www.soundproofwindows.com/ that make windows to go in over your existing windows.. Not sure how nice they would be...

Anyone have any recommendations? Any popular type of window that would help get rid of this?

It's not for a studio, so it needs to be a regular house window that can open and close and lock.

Unfortunately I can't recommend a solution or give an opinion as to the effectiveness of the sound proof windows. But I too have a similar problem that my wife keeps wanting me to solve. We live about 200 feet from a "farm to market" road that has gone from a two lane road to a four lane road with a center turning lane since the house was built. We just received word that the road will now be expanded to 6 lanes with a center turning lane. The road noise is obviously increasing and my two daughters' bedrooms are on the side of the house closest to the mutating autobaun. If the soundproof windows are a viable solution, I would definitely be interested.

The first step would be to look under the siding on the outside and seel if the window is sealed around the perimeters. If it isn't, either use great stuff, or caulk it up if the gap is small enough. Also look at how the window is sealing up when it's closed. I live by a highway too and one of my rooms was louder than the others, and I noticed some of the weather stripping was bad. I replaced it and when the window is closed now it stops much more sound.

I just helped my brother-in-law replace 80 year old windows, and when pulled them out there was practially no seal around them. When we put the new windows in we made sure to seal every side and the new windows are very silent.
