Design/Questions for Basement Studio (vaulted slab)

Post by freaza »

First of all i like to say hello to everyone who made this amazing forum possible! nice to see that we got alle the same "problems" and questions all over the world
:D

after spending hours in this forum and waiting till i get rod's book i have some questions:

i have found this really nice basement with 3 rooms as you see below. the basement is in an apartment house located in a nice area in the city (zurich). the whole first floor is an office, people live in the second floor.

i dont' know if the walls are made of concrete or bricks with plaster but they seem VERY solid and you hear no noise from outside.

my idea is to build the control room in room nr.1 and to record vocals and instruments in room nr.2. my budget is max $4000 to build the studio.

my worries are:

1. are the vaulted slabs a problem? what can i do with the ceiling?
2. all the rooms have only 3 existing walls. What would be the best way to build the fourth wall to avoid problems with the neighbours and get a good sound?
---> staggered stud wall construction with 3 layers of plasterboard is ok?
3. the other 3 walls should be standard stud walls with one layer???
4. as i read in the forum, there is no need to float the floor beacause it is a basement and the ground is solid. correct?
5. should i build the walls not parallel or can i just use these absorbers for good accoustic? http://www.johnlsayers.com/HR/index1.html
6. there are already holes in the wall as you can see. they're not really big but i want to use them. is that ok?

so that are my biggest worries so far. i would be very happy if someone could help me with my questions :D

if somone needs the sketchup file i can send it, but i didn't found out how to keep the file under 500KB.

thnx!

since the concave shape of the ceiling would tend to focus sound, hanging some porous absorbers along the ceiling will help control it and preserve ceiling height. space them a bit apart to maximize their effect. otherwise its a nice design.

thnx gullfo! i will include your suggestion to my design. is it enough if i hang absorbers so that the ceiling height would be 2.00 meters?

what about question nr.2

btw. i went to your page, that's some serious stuff u got there!!

Here some additional pix of the future control room

i wouldn't put up 40cm worth of absorption... i think 10cm of rigid insulation (48kg/m3) should make a good difference... the rooms will feel tight enough with only 2.3m height...

for isolation - i would use double walls instead of staggered stud.
