Wickes (UK) 'heavy duty insulation' - wrong for panels?

Post by The Beatsmith »

Hi there,

I've built a load of 50x50cm panels with the 'red/orange' wickes 1200x600x30mm heavy duty insulation, and i'm using it at reflection points (either side of and above mix position), and above the vocal tracking area (just one slab thick for now). They are covered in ikea frames and wrapped in a very breathable cotton fabric. They are flat against the wall/ceiling, and are 'open backed' (ie the back isn't covered).

It's certainly very nice to work with however, i've always thought that it could possibly be TOO dense? Or is it OK?

I've searched around but never found a definitive answer. I think i've read rumours that the density is really high, which is why i'm wondering if it's TOO high.

Cheers for any feedback on this

And i put them here (excuse the mess):

The colourful patterned trap is also filled with the same insulation. The big bass trap behind the speakers is a GIK 244.

What density is it? Without knowing that, it's hard to say if it is too dense or not.

But it does look to be rather thin. That "multicolor" panel at your first reflection point / window looks to only be an inch or two thick. How thick is it?
