Cedar planks for slats on John's Wall Units?

Post by Myriad_Rocker »

First off...I'm using John's wall units to do my resonators. My assumption is that these are broadband resonators.

I went shopping today for wood for my bass traps. While I was there, I bought some 1/2" rough cut cedar planks for another project. I love the look of them so much that I'm wanting to use them for the resonator slats. Would this be okay? I know this seems like a stupid question but I honestly don't know. My first inclination is that the slats in John's link are 1" thick for a reason. So...that got me thinking as well. What if I either doubled up on the cedar or used a 1/2" pine or whiteboard on the backside of the cedar to create a 1" thick slat? Something cheaper for the backing, that is. The cedar planks aren't cheap. :D

On another, and almost completely unrelated note...my wife suggested painting the frame of the resonators to match the trim in the room. Do you think, aesthetically speaking, that would look alright with the cedar or stained whiteboard?

doubling up should be fine. as far as aesthetics... it should be ok, if you think it does

Personally, I thought painting the frame white to match the trim looked a little odd...that's why I asked. What about black? The reason I ask is that mdf is cheaper than buying dimensional lumber to make these. But I can't live with looking at bare MDF so that requires painting it.

Also...I just figured up how much rough cut cedar I would need (it's 5/8" thick, actually) and I was surprised at how cheap I'd be coming in on them. :D Just back it with some 3/8" pine craft board, which is also cheap and I think it will look GOOD! And smell good, too!

What should I bond the boards with? Does it matter? Can I just glue them together with wood glue and some brads?

i think you can bond them with good wood glue. black or dark gray (more neutral) would work.

MDF comes as Melamine too. Woodgrains, white, black, gray. And if you order enough, any color in the rainbow. Paint the edges, or edgeband.
alright, breaks over , back on your heads......
