Do bass traps need to be fixed to the wall?

Post by abt »

I'm planning on building some super chunk style bass traps. I can easily fixed one corner to the wall but the second, I need to be able to move it out of the way. Is it okay to just sit them on the floor and push them tight into the corner or they need to be fixed to the wall? I've seen cases where they are glued to the wall tight and others where their screwed in, does it make any difference? My thought is that it probably wouldn't make any difference.

It makes no difference, but you might want to mount them in some kind of structure with wheels on it, to make it easy to push them around, and not damage them from all that movement. I can't see it being easy to move a 2 meter tall stack of mineral wool around, by just sliding it on the floor!

Thanks Stuart. Yeah, I'll probably line the back with some sort of panels like thin MDF or plywood. The idea of wheels is a good one, I hadn't thought of that. They'll be on carpet so I'll try sliding them around first.

They'll be on carpet so ...
Carpet? Are you saying that you have carpet on the floor? Generally, carpet is not much good for a studio floor! A hard reflective floor is a much better option for a studio. Concrete, hardwood, laminate, tile. Carpet is seldom used these days.

Or maybe I misunderstood, and you were just going to put the superchunks on a piece of carpet?

Yes, unfortunately the floor is carpet. There's not much I can do about it. It's a pretty terrible room really. I'm trying to make it as workable as possible. This is a home studio not a commercial space. Sorry If I've given anyone the wrong impression.

I'm a bit overwhelmed at the moment because I've got so much on but want to start recording again but I need/want to update my monitors and room treatment before I get going. I've tried treating the room before with varying degrees of success. I made a post about that on another form, It didn't go well. Maybe I should post it over here.

I might also make the bass traps in 3 sections around a meter high and stack them so they're easier to move around.

Regarding carpet....

Is it possible and/or practical to install laminate on top of the carpet if you can not remove it for some reason??

Just put down a sheet of plywood under the amp--pick it up when you are done. Works a treat! Cheers! JIMO

I'm still going but I'll let you know. I've lined the back of corner traps on both sides of the room with MDF in an attempt to make the behave the same way.
