Hi everybody!
This is my first post, so forgive me if I make an unintended faux pas.
I've attached a jpg file I knocked up using Sketchup of a room we intend to build for rehearsing/recording in.
I'd gratefully appreciate it if I could get some advice as to whether we're doing the right thing or not.
OK, details:
Budget - we've been quoted 2000 Euro for the materials, which is a good bit north of what we'd hoped, but so long as it doesn't go past that, we can survive.
The reason for the expense is that the whole thing has to be raised about 40 cm off the ground - the place we're in is prone to some mild flooding about once every 18 months (we've been there for two and a half years now and its done it twice - narrow escapes with gear both times, so it's time to take a few more precautions). We're putting it on concrete blocks, 18mm plywood sitting on 6"x2"s.
For the walls, we're using 2"x4" with 6mm Plywood sheets and 150mm insulation, 8 foot high.
Similarly for the roof.
The place is actually a HUGE lockup - roughly 6.5m W by 6.5m H x 10m L, all concrete except for the ceiling. It is really cold and doesn't sound great (though we have managed to record a decent sounding album there!).
We're right in the middle of a huge industrial complex that's pretty much empty, so we have no need to concern ourselves with soundproofing.
Mainly we need to build a place that's of a size that's feasible to heat, and be a nicer environment to work in, and, with the help of God, SOUND nice.
For the control room, I mainly need an area that will be decent enough to monitor in when recording - I don't think there'll be much mixing going on in there (though I can't say for certain, but it's less of a priority at the moment) as we tend to farm out mixing to someone who has a clue. I just need to be able to ascertain that what is "going to tape" sounds good. I figure that with the walls we're going to be putting in it won't be fantastically well isolated, so am I wasting my time altogether even bothering with the dividing wall and should I give up the idea of a control room?
SO, IN CONCLUSION:
For building the room, I have an uncle who is a carpenter and a builder who's going to be helping us out, so I'm not too stressed about the actual construction of it (at least not yet), I just need to know if what we're doing will, in the end, provide us with a decent live room and a useable control room.
I hope that's not too rambling!
Thanks for reading!
Darren.

I've got limited knowledge regarding studio design, but my 2 cents:
I'd build a room-in-room separating the live room from the control room with double walls. Check out this link: http://johnlsayers.com/Recmanual/Titles/Acoustics3.htm
