custom main monitors

Post by jtvrdy »

Hi from Spain ,
I'm bulding a new studio, now finishing with the isolation...,my first idea was to soffit the Genelec 1038B as main monitors but my initial budged was gone with the isolation...and no genelec possible :(
My idea is made a custom 3-way pasive main monitors I serched and find this posible speakers to use:
from the studio series
lows
12BR70 12"http://profesional.beyma.com/ENGLISH/producto.php
mids
6B30P 6.5"http://profesional.beyma.com/ENGLISH/producto.php
or
5MP60N 5"http://profesional.beyma.com/ENGLISH/producto.php
higs
T2010 1.25"http://profesional.beyma.com/ENGLISH/producto.php
filter
F300 http://profesional.beyma.com/ENGLISH/producto.php

for the mids which will better the 6.5 or 5" ?
any advise about the cabinet ?
for the 12" they recomended 50-120l enclosure ,but wich will be better larger or smaller ? vented or closed ?

thanks,
(and sorry for my english still learning.....)

Hi Josep,

I wouldn't recommend that you design your own monitor unless you have a LOT of experience. However, building a pre-designed kit might be a good way to go.

Here's an example from Zalytron. The Audiom TD5\Focal W Cone at the bottom of the page http://www.zalytron.com/photos.htm

To echo the illustrious moderator,

Designing "real" speakers is non-trivial, and I speak as someone who has done that as a consultant in the past. It definitely gives you appreciation for those who design them for the major firms.

As for Beyma, they are good company, and make a large number of OEM drivers for professional live sound speaker manufacturers.

I serched on the Beyma site and found "Enclosure Designs Catalogue"
http://profesional.beyma.com/ENGLISH/recursos.php
so it will be a kind of "Kit" to construct...

the choose I have is,with the 12"woofer and 1.25" tweeter what size for the mids 5" or 6.5" ?
