Rehearsal room with good sound insulation

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Rehearsal room with good sound insulation

Post by funkyvas »

Hi!

My name is Vasco! Im a drummer/percussionist from Portugal and this is my first post here. Thanks for accepting me in this forum.

I have plans to build my rehearsal room inside an old warehouse with ceramic hollowed brick walls (17cm thick). The roof is made of thin sheet of aluminum tiles.

The warehouse is 8,2 meters x 5,2 meters (lenght x width). The ceiling is angled in the width (5,2m) so the highest part is 3 meters and the lowest part is 2,6 meters.

I live in a rural area and the nearest neighbour is 800 m from the warehouse. I need a space as soundproofed as I can, so im not gonna be restricted to certain practice/teaching/rehearsal times. Im going for a room inside a room type of constructuion. Inside of the warehouse Im allowed to use a space of 5.2 meters by 4,10meters for my detached room. So in that area I already took the old concrete floor out because it was broken and I wanted to detach it from the rest of the building My plan is to build solid concrete block walls that would be 20 cm away from the exterior walls. the new detached floor would be in concrete and then Ill add a wooden floor on top of it. The ceiling its gonna be made out of OSB wood 12mm /Aglomex (acoustic foam) 80 mm /OSB 12 mm.

So What do you guys think? Im not sure if im gonna angle the ceiling or if m gonna leave it 2,50 meters all around the room. If I can have some acoustic benefits from angling it, i might go for it.

Also I heard about leaking walls as very effective bass traps. Would I benefit from adding a walled closet with a leaky wall as a giant bass trap?

which other acoustic treatments sould I be looking for in this type of room to get better sound inside the room?

Any advice would be much appreciated and of great help!

Cheers,
Vasco
