calling all experts...vocal booth build?

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

calling all experts...vocal booth build?

Post by elove »

I am trying to build a vocal booth for the first time. Here is the deal... My room is 18X14. I am going to put the booth in the corner of the room, using two sides of the room as my walls (one wall is made out of wood, covered in some type of fiberglass board or something and the other wall is brick). So technically I am only building an L-shaped wall since I am using the corner of the room as my other two walls. Well of course one of the walls will have to be a small door. Now for my questions..
1. What are the best wood materials to use in construction?
2. Should I use wood for the walls and put foam on the inside or should I put one layer of wood, some type of insulation, and seal with another panel of wood?
3. What type of wood do I need for the door?
4. What is a good size to actually build the booth? I was thinking about 5X5 but some of you were saying that 5X5 may be too small?
6. What type of light Do I use for the inside?
7. What about ventilation...is there a particular type of fan to use and where to put it?
8. Will using the brick side of the room affect anything, negative/positive?

If you all can give me specific answers to these questions, I would appreciate it.

fans:

i was thinking about using one of these.

this company is cool because they explain a little bit about how to calculate static pressure (airflow resistance) in a system and tell you what CFM to expect for different levels of static pressure.

check out the dryer booster section for simple guidelines

not sure if any of these are small enough for you, but they can be speed controlled if they are too powerful (that would make it quieter too)

... within limits of course ... at some speed they will stop working at all obviously

Depending on how much isolation you need, this can get a lot more complex than you realize - there's no point in building anything if you just cut a hole or two for ventilation, with or without a fan.

Also, if you want decent sound you shouldn't build a booth with any two dimensions the same, nor should they be even #'s of feet - even with absorption inside, the booth will give much better sounding results if it's odd #'s of feet, like (minimum) 3x5x7 feet inside, or 5x7x9 (doesn't matter sound-wise which dimension is which)

If you re-read this

and follow ALL the guidelines, including editing your profile to include a location, we can help you figure out just how much/what you should build... Steve
