Glass Block (glassblock or glassbrick) in window sill

How thick should my walls be, should I float my floors (and if so, how), why is two leaf mass-air-mass design important, etc.

Glass Block (glassblock or glassbrick) in window sill

Post by zulusound »

Greetings, I would like to hear if anyone has had direct experience with sealing a window well with glass block, in addition to double pane windows. I have two large windows- 10'x4' and 6'x4'. I am facing the street and want some natural light, but don't want to have people look in my window and see my gear, also it seems that if mounted properly with non hardening caulk, it would be dense enough to contain sound. I was planning on putting up a thick theater curtain that I could "draw" if mixing anything critical. Thanks!

Yes I have a glass block window in my place. It is 57" x 57". The city made me put in a window due to code when i built the addition onto my house for my studio. I told them I was building a home theater and they said they didn't care. I had to have 1/10 of the squre footage of the room had to have direct sunlight. ANYWAY made some calls and found that glass blocks were good for what i was doing and contacted ACME Brick in my area and they have a glass block framing system. I got the framer to frame the metal frame into the wall and I installed the blocks myself. I had to wrap each block with this styrophom sheet and slide it into the window from from the outside. Afterwards you have to seal all around each block with silicone. Its easy. The frame systems come in different sizes so you can order what you need and it is very good at keeping the outside out and my sound in. my neighbors don't hear a thing
I like it Phat and Round

Thats ridiculous, I never heard of such a thing. I believe you though. They come up up with the wierdest crap these building depts. Sometimes, I swear they make this stuff up as they go. I'm a Constuction project manager here in CT, I have a "code compliance consultant" that I hire occassionally to deal with just this sort of BS. You gotta see the look on some of these bldg inspectors faces when I pull this guy outta my back pocket. :P
